Invoicing electrical work

Electrical jobs range from a quick socket replacement to a full rewire. Whatever the size, the invoice should show labor, materials and any testing or certification separately, so the customer understands the price and has a record for their property file.

For larger jobs billed in stages, issue an invoice at each stage and note which stage it covers. Record earlier payments in Amount Paid if you invoice the remaining balance.

What to include on an electrician invoice

  • Your business name, registration or license number and contact details
  • The customer’s name and the property address
  • An invoice number, the date of the work and the due date
  • Labor, by hours or per job
  • Materials: cable, consumer units, fittings, fixtures
  • Testing, inspection or certificate fees
  • Tax, the total and payment details

Example line items

  • Labor – install 6 LED downlights (3 h)
  • LED downlights, fire-rated
  • Consumer unit replacement – fixed price
  • Electrical installation condition report
  • EV charger installation

Keep good records

Use a consistent invoice number format, such as ELEC-2026-001, and reference any certificate number in the notes. If the job came from a quote, mention the quote number in the notes so both documents can be matched.

Frequently asked questions

Can I create a quote first?

Yes. Use the quote generator, then switch the document type to Invoice when the work is done. Your line items stay in place.

How do I show materials at cost?

Add each item with its quantity and price. If you add a markup, include it in the rate or as a separate line.

Can I add a certificate number?

Yes, in the notes or in the item description, so it appears on the PDF.

Is BillOak free?

Yes. Unlimited invoices, no account and no watermark.
